Java vs .NET numbers

with 2 comments

General Windows Developer Numbers

JohnMont (who oughta know) provided these numbers today as “quotable and public” so I thought I would:

  • There are ~6M professional developers worldwide, about 90% of whom target Windows
  • There are about 2.5M .NET developers
  • >60 of the Fortune 100 develop using .NET
  • Forrester says that 56% of enterprises in North America are
choosing .NET for their development requirements vs. 44% choosing J2EE

According the legend (JohnMont didn’t comment on this part), 4-5M of
those 6M developers targeting Windows are Visual Basic developers,
which means that if they ever get tired of being made fun of by the C
family of developers, we’re going to be trapped in phone booths while
they decent on us like the birds in an Alfred Hitchcock movie

I find it difficult to believe that 56% of enterprises are chossing
.NET over J2EE.. Whats the fine print? It just seems too fishy!

Aah the blog corporate mania begins :)

Not So Oddpost

The Oddpost acquisition by Yahoo (at pretty handsome terms) has been announced. Oddpost provides web-based email and RSS aggregation, funded by Venture Strategy Partners and Draper Associates just months before.

Dave has a decent rationale for the acquisition:

Oddpost turned the idea of what you could do with a browser upside down, by producing a clone of Microsoft Outlook in JavaScript and DHTML running in MSIE. Since then, they have labored in relative obscurity, growing a customer base, raising VC money, adding people, and staying out of the way. Then Google launches Gmail, with a very Oddpostish interface, and someone at Yahoo says “Hmmm, I’ve seen that somewhere,” calls up Ethan and Iain and their new VCs and asks “Are you for sale?” and the rest is history.

With Technorati, Newsgator, Feedbuner, etc., get ready for the Social Software bubblet meme. Or at least some interesting Pops.

Look for many more startups in the blogspace to be bought over ;) Ahh sweet.. Yet another boat missed..(May be not ;) )When am I ever going to learn to implement any of my ideas :(

Bloglines get link blogs almost right .. A BIG ALMOST

without comments

I was pretty thrilled when Bloglines recently upgraded. Lots of improvements, linkBlog the most significant of all the improvements. Seemless integration with ur blog reader and web based! Nothing to setup. Very Very cool. I started using it right away and plugged the link blog onto my blog. Everything looks purrrrfect.. right?

WRONG.. and here is why.. So I subscribe to the feed and then click on the click on the link. Its takes me to the RSS feed instead of the site!! This would work in a perfect world if and when everyone offers full feeds. Most of the sites dont offer full feeds so why would one want to click 3 times to get to read a news item or a blog entry. Now how lame is that! I understand the need for Bloglines keep users within their site and get more users to sign up. If thats the idea then do it the msn way but have a pane with Bloglines logo on it but this is lame.. Not many are going to use it if this is not rectified.

IMHO this is a show stopper and I might think of switching back to posting links on my blog :( How disappointing! An anti-climax :(
