The new americans

Was channel surfing when I ran into this program. I love these documentaries. Make sure you check it out. This program reminded me of how naive I was when I landed in this country a few years back. Wasnt sure what to expect and in all these years, I have learnt one thing that I will carry on.. Being open minded. May be one of these days I will write about the experience of immigrating to the US.

Spring brings changes

Spring has bought some interesting changes in life & good ones too ;) I am moving on from my prior position at a Big 3 automotive to a Big
5 consulting company! Now you know why my blog frequency has been low ;) The new position brings lot of new avenues for growth and other
fringe benefits ;) I have been looking for a few weeks and I finally
settled on this offer. Boy it feels good to get out of contracting!
HELL YA! Will post more about my position later.

Lessons learnt from the job hunt

TODOs:

  • Put your resume online with your blog – gets better visibility
thro google. Its unbelievable how people use google to find talent.
  • Put up a profile on linkedIN – I am starting recive calls/emails
from folks crusing thro linkedin. It appears social software is finally
starting to trickle down to recruiters.
  • Keep your resume to a max of 3 pages irrespective of whether it
is full time or consulting positions. Provide a longer version if &
when asked(if someone’s looking for a longer version then its a
contracting position for an IT organisation)
  • Post
your resume to standard job postion sites like monster, hotjobs &
dice.com (Monster is definitely better than hotjobs, while dice seems
    to popular with recruiters)
  • Keep checking craigslist for updates. Subscribe to craigslist RSS feed.
  • Create
a seperate email ID on yahoo & make sure you set up mobile alerts
for emails. Use this email address in your resume. Make sure use a
password that you are willing to share the password, just in case ur
driving and you need the resume to be sent to kinkos(for screw ups!)
  • Keep your resume handy in a portable USB drive, never know who you meet ;)
  • Also remember to put your resume on yahoo briefcase.
  • Save the address of every resume that you send out.
  • Dont worry about not applying if you dont have all the things
mentioned in the job description. The general trend seems to be ask for
    everything.
  • Buy a combo charger (mobile & home) to keep you cell phone always charged.

DONTs:

  • Never write a covering letter/email. Doesnt seem to work! Just
write a simple 2 liner which talks about your interest in the position.
    KISS!
  • It seems to be a trend to talk about pay range even before they
talk to you. Tell them that you would like to address the issue later.
  • *important*
Doesnt help to talk about your blog at work. Makes it difficult to use
your blog network while hunting for your job. Some people at my current
work place read my blog and hence it was impossible to talk about my
    job hunt. Big dissappointment!

I have had a really good experience with Yahoo spam control! so far. My account has been in existence for more than 6 years and has been around on the NET, most of my spam is usually caught by the Spam gaurd. Unfortunately, in the last 2 days I am getting boat loads of spam into my inbox. Makes me wonder if this is an anomoly or something is cooking behind the scenes .. I wish Jeremy can confirm this ;)

hmm, will keep you folks posted.

eMagazines come of Age: Take II

While straying into the web I ended on KeepMedia thro (http://theendoffree.com/), an alternative approach to eMagazines. I had written about an a Zinio in my earlier entry.  In a day & age where free on the web really mean FEE(atleast for online publications), a consolidate subscription does make a lot of sense. As the technology gets to mature, I am willing to subscribe to one of these services. There are a lot of hurdles before the technology matures.

Gee, I just ran into 2 more services while investigating more on eMags for this blog entry lol ;)

Apparently this market seems to be more mature that I thought it to be! Newstand even has newspapers from India! Holly Molly! If only one could get the other popular newspapers to sign up.

While Zinio, qmags & Newsstand take the approach of download the magazine(pdf) to one’s local drive, Keepmedia seems to be archive them online and one has to subscribe to their service. I bet one of these companies are going to be picked up by amazon! Its a low hanging fruit. Atleast I hope they do! The price of the subscriptions should come down if they are bought over by a big company. The lack of marketing by some of these companies is what amazes me! I can bet that there will be atleast 50,000 subscriptions to Indian papers by non resident Indians. Make that 20$ a year per subscription that accounts for $100,000 in revenue. This is just one country, do the math and numbers would look much more interesting! The key to success is bundling some of the papers/magazines and offering a good yearly subscription fee. On second thoughts a NETFLIX like model would work even better!

On the flip side, there definitely lies the danger of eMagazines/eNewspapers fizzling out like eBooks! Although reading eBooks on handheld devices have definitely taken off. With all due respect to adobe, they have done a total piss ass job of their eBook format, I love the plucket format. May be a eNewspaper/eMagazine would work for handhelds as we speek and as tablet PC technology start to mature the existing technology would fit right in.

The thought of reading the Indian newspaper (The Hindu) sipping Indian Coffee seems inviting! *grin*

Amazing blend of eastern & western music. Its more of eastern music with a western blend. I am beginning to love my iPod!

Interesting biography!

Biographies have always interested me .. Here’s a email forward that I recieved this morning.

Years ago a hardworking man took his family from New York State to
Australia to take advantage of a work opportunity there. Part of this
man’s  family was a handsome son who had aspirations of joining
the circus as a trapeze artist or an actor. This young fellow, biding
his time until a circus job or even as a stagehand came along, worked
at the local shipyards which bordered on the worse section of town.

Walking home from work one evening, this young man was attacked by five
thugs who wanted to rob him. Instead of just giving up his money the
young fellow resisted. However they bested him easily and proceeded to
beat him to a pulp. They mashed his face with their boots, and kicked
and beat his body brutally with clubs, leaving him for dead. When the
police happened to find him lying in the road they assumed he was dead
and called for the Morgue Wagon.

On the way to the morgue, a policeman heard him gas! p for air, and
they immediately took him to the emergency unit at the hospital.

When he was placed on a gurney, a nurse remarked to her horror, that
this young man no longer had a face. His eye socket was smashed, his
skull, legs and arms fractured, his nose literally hanging from his
face, all his teeth were gone, and his jaw was almost completely torn
from his skull.

Although his life was spared, he spent over a year in the hospital.
When he finally left, his body may have healed but his face was
disgusting to look at. He was no longer the handsome youth that
everyone admired

When the young man started to look for work again, he was turned down
by everyone just on account of the way he looked. One potential
employer suggested to him that he join the freak show at the circus
as  “The man who had no face”. And he did this for a while. He was
still rejected by everyone and no one wanted to be seen in his company.
He had thoughts of suicide.  This wen! t on for 5 years.

One day he passed a church and sought some solace there. Entering the
church he encountered a priest who had seen him sobbing while kneeling
in a pew.  The priest took pity on him and took him to the rectory
where they talked at length. The priest was impressed with him to such
a degree that he said that he would do everything possible for him that
could be done to restore his dignity and life, if the young man would
promise to be the best Catholic he could be, and trust in God’s mercy
to free him from his torturous life.

The young man went to Mass and Communion every day, and after thanking
God for saving his life, asked God to only give him peace of mind and
the grace to be the best man he could ever be in His eyes.

The priest, through his personal contacts was able to secure the
services of the best plastic surgeon in Australia. There would be no
cost to the young man, as the doctor was the priest’s best friend. The
doctor too was so im! pressed by the young man, who outlook now on
life, even though he had experienced the worst, was filled with good
humor and love.

The surgery was a miraculous success. All the best dental work was also
done for him. The young man became everything he promised God he would
be.

He was also blessed with a wonderful, beautiful wife, and many
children, and success in an industry, which would have been the
furthest thing from his mind as a career, if not for the goodness of
God and the love of the people who cared or him. This he acknowledges
publicly.

The young man was and is……….

Mel Gibson

His life was the inspiration for his production of the movie “The Man
Without A Face.” He is to be admired by all of us as a God fearing man,
a political conservative, and an example to all as a true man of
courage.

And to think I admired him before I knew any of this!! He is quite a man!!!!
