Annoucing SUN 2.0

without comments

Am I dreaming? or is this really happening? Or has SUN hijacked the
Marketing guys from Microsft! Jesus freaking Christ! Im impressed!
Alrite Im talking about SUN’s quarterly event.

This is the first time I have seen SUN come up with a clear concise message! “Simple licensing, ownership, pricing with open, secure interoperable software
It *finally* seems like SUN is operating as a single unit. I like the
idea of a consolidated message once every quarter rather releasing news
releases every other day!It serves as a reality check once a
quarter(Note to self: Come out with quarterly news reports for
personal, professional accomplishments) Lots of work seems to have gone
within sun to come up with all the annoucements. If someone @ SUN wrote
a book like “Who Says Elephants Can’t Dance? Inside IBM’s Historic Turnaround“(if you havent read it, please do so!) in a few years, I believe this would be pivotal turning point for SUN.

Introduction of Java Systems (Enterprise, Desktop &
others) Support for x86 architecture. (Yeah they finally get it!, its
not all about the big ass computers) It was all about security,
recall, cost and complexity which is what project orion is all
about. Lots of interesting details about the Java Systems
(100$/60$ Enterprise/Desktop/per Employee).  Software to ship in a
single DVD instead of huge CD case! Some really cool demos of the Java
Desktop System (3D interface, Star Office 7, mozilla). The use of linux
was not highlighted upon that much but used when they wanted to provide
the impression of being open and secure. Interesting stratergy. Even
the Web cast & the flash presentation was very well made. Heck,
even the stage and the background screens were setup to reflect the
message.

  • Scott was back to his boring ways of comparing the
automakers and hockey games. Scott, we know you are from detroit and
enjoy hockey! Darn it, this guy needs a makeover! Its time he learnt it
from the bill gates & the steves jobs of the world!
  • Whats a SUN conference without Microsoft/IBM Bashing ;) Dont forget to add SCO to the list now :)
  • Cant recollect a single conference that hasnt had a
demo failure. Hey, for all the trash talking of microsoft why not
do a conference without a demo failure ;)

Lots of details that I can go thro but you are better off watching the webcast . Wanna invest in SUN this is probably the best time, its hovering @ 4$

Longhorn Blogs

with 4 comments

More information from the Devil’s Den!

Right around the time for Microsoft PDC, Longhorn blogs seem to have poped up. I see only a few blogs, here’s a screen shot.

I have a dirty feeling that Microsoft is trying to lmmitate Java.net.
However unlike Java.net, this would end up being another wing of the
Microsoft Propaganda machine. It is interesting to see how corporations
have started to use Blogs as a channel for dispersing information. A
lot of my questions are being answered  ;)   Sadly bloggers
are posting at multiple blogs rather than posting one end and
aggregating in the other end, just like Russ & Mobitopia. All you
need to to is to create a category and let the other blog aggregate!
Folks always have a way of complicating things!

Now can someone get JCP folks to start a blog?

New look for the weblog

with 7 comments

My previous design had way too much clutter and too many icons that were not being used. I decided to focus on the content and have a new profile page that is currently under development. The profile bar was adapated from Mark. I’d like to know what you think about the new look & feel.

Been busy @ work trying to get stuff done.

Will this ever end?

without comments

Yet another series of blasts in
mumbai
.

When will there ever realise? Im sick and tired of terrorism. So much

so that I have unsubscribed myself from Cable (CNN/MSNBC). We have
kept

quiet and taken it for long enough now. Its time to attack POK (Pak

occupied kashmir) and flush the breeding camps! 15 years of patience
is

good enough.

Search for RSS aggregator over!

with 3 comments

After 2 years of using different aggregators and moving
from one to another, I believe I have settled down on a RSS reader. I
started reader blogs using my browser and bookmarks, then came alone
Sharpreader and then I started reading blogs on my palm using plucker,
then moved back to sharpreader. Finally found FeedDemon and I just love
it!

This software provides a wonderful interface and the
organisation of the app is really nice! Here are some of the features
that differentiates with the other apps that I have used.

  • The newspaper interface – Very cool! Just get up
everymorning or evening and update the group newspaper and voila, you
have the updated newspaper! (*there are some quirks on some pages)
  • Ingerated browser interface – It has integrated Web
browser into the app and really cool part is tabbed browsing for IE ;)
    Pretty sweet!
  • Auto RSS feed importing – when you browse to a blog
and import the blog, just click on the XML icon and voila, it brings up
the import dialog and import it right away! Also tried importing an
OPML feed and the darn thing just works!
  • Existing RSS feeds – This App comes with bundled list
of RSS feeds. Some really cool feeds that I had not subscribed to. This
is one cool feature for a newbie. If you are a newbie and have not
chosen a feed reader, this is one compelling reasons to choose it.
  • Email/Blogging integration – You can email/blog the entries that you read/visit. pretty neat!
  • Synchronisation with online directory – Wish Yahoo
supports opml like they support bookmarks. Think of the power of
syncing up with Work and Home.
  • Im yet to explore news bin and Watches. Stay tuned for more info.

Features that I would like to see in FreeDaemon

  • Support for Mozilla/Firebird – Not sure how easy it
is for BRad to add it. Adding IE support using Win32/MFC is pretty
simple, you just need to use CHTMLView.
  • Email/blog/bookmark all tabs/browser windows open. This would be a cool feature.
  • Exporting all the channel groups, I just see support
to export one channel group (A group of rss feeds) but one could have
multiple Channel groups and if I want to export the whole setup to be
imported @ work, then im kinda stuck! Would be nice to see if an export
    and import feeddaemon config file.
  • Support for large OPML files – FeedDaemon has issues
with a large OPML file(imported as a Channel Group in my case 125
feeds. It recommends that we split it, but its a pain to split 100+ rss
feeds. I would rather have the tool automatically split it for me.
  • Notification of updates for RSS feed – Would love to see a notification like the one on MSN messenger that shows me the title.

All in all, a neat app! I would not mind paying for this when it comes out! Grab it here.

More blog tools

without comments

BlogPulse Key Phrases, Key People, BlogBites, and Top Links
are mined daily from new entries in over 70,000 weblogs using machine
learning algorithms and natural language processing techniques.

Neat! I was thinking on these lines and boom what do you know there is
already someone who has implemented it! *darn*  The next step
would be combine this technology with geourl. Think about the
ramifications of this technology, Huge! Let me explain,  Lets
assume one wants to know what is being discussed in a particular
country. You dont need to rely on CNN and bbc all the time. Just look @
the blog pulse for that country (using geourl).

Lets take the application to the next level, lets assume big companies
want to know what their customers are talking about in their blogs.
Take for example Microsoft, their customer base is huge! These use
newsgroups and events like the PDC to address their client base and
their developers. They could use this technology to see what their
community is talking about. The information would bubble up thro the
clutter and that is HUGE.

Alrite, I do know that this technology is in its nascent stages but if the promise is kept than oppurtunities are immense!

Feels like 1999 all over again, if only the job market improves!

So, Are you getting married ;)?

http://www.rediff.com/news/2003/sep/16diary.htm

They seem to research forever to decide on a car, and
invariably go for a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. They collect all the
coupons for Vons and Ralph’s, look for deals for TVs, apartments, you
name it. But somehow, when it comes to marriage, all they need is a
month!

In any case, I have always felt Indian guys are at the bottom of the dating chain.

Interesting, writeup ;)

Update: This is not my writeup but an article written by someone else on rediff.

India blocks a Yahoo site

without comments

India blocks a Yahoo site

BANGALORE, INDIA – India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued orders to ISPs (Internet Service Providers) in the country to block the url (uniform resource locator) http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/kynhun, according to a government statement Monday.

Was supposidly done because the site contained material against the government of India. I can get to the site (I live in the US) but cant access the messages as the bandwidth for the group on yahoo has been exhausted. I find this proposterous! This is not Pakistani television to be banned! Freaking morons, folks who read this are educated and Im suprised and ashamed that the government does not trust its educated citizens to make their decision. This is not a medium where the uneducated are going to be biased. Must have been a *Moron* of the first order who passed this order. What the heck is nasscom doing?

All this is the name of the largest democracy! Come on now! Im appalled!
